April is Canada’s first ever Filipino Restaurant Month. All month long, restaurants in cities across the country will be celebrating the culture and flavours of the Philippines.
The celebration is presented the Philippine Department of Tourism, and will feature select restaurants offering prix fixe menus throughout April to draw new customers in for some great Filipino food.
“We hope that this event will build interest and understanding of the broad range of our cuisines and create bonds of friendship among our people,” wrote Teodoro Locsin Jr., Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs, in a statement on the launch of Filipino Restaurant Month.
Locsin Jr. also wrote that he hoped Canadians would be inspired to visit the Philippines after experiencing the food this month.
More restaurants have been joining in with the festival over the past month, and there are now restaurants in seven provinces participating, with a total of 10 participating restaurants in the GTA.
All month long, iSlas Filipino BBQ at 1690 Queen Street West will be offering a kare-kare fried pork belly and lumpia pre-fixe, or an adobo Philippine marinated chicken and empanadas pre-fixe, with sides and desserts included, for $25.
Kanto by Tita Flips, a Filipino street food market stall at 707 Dundas Street West is also offering lunches of lechon kawali, chicken inasal, daing na bangus, or vegan laing, along with lumpia and a dessert, for $25 all month long.
Lechon Republik at 1 Romar Crescent, near Eglinton West, is also doing a $25 prix-fixe offering all April.
In North York, MB The Place to Be at 3434 Bathurst Street and Republika Restobar at 288A Wilson Avenue are doing $25 month long dinner specials, whereas Casa Manila at 879 York Mills Road is doing a $44 dinner from April 24 to 30.
Wilson’s Haus of Lechon is doing a $20 lunch or dinner deal at both its locations in North York at 365 Wilson Avenue, and in Scarborough at 8 Glen Watford Drive. B’s Sizzling Kitchen at 430 Horner Avenue in Etobicoke will also be participating in Filipino Restaurant Month.
FV Foods in Scarborough has a range of prix fixe options, ranging from $20 to a $50 boodle fight meal for two, available all month long. On Sunday, April 17, the restaurant is also doing a Filipino Buffet from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
