A few years since its first international foray with a store in Scarborough, popular Indian street food franchise chaiiwala is looking to expand its share in the Canadian market further with a new location in a buzzing neighbourhood.
Although no official announcements have been made yet, it is believed that the latest location will be housed at 1104 Danforth Ave., giving patrons an exciting new joint to try in a neighbourhood that already contains many gems.
This move will bring a chaiiwala location closer to the downtown core of Toronto, and if expansion plans are to be taken at face value, it shouldn’t be long before the city’s core sees a location of its own.
If it wasn’t obvious through the name, the signature item on the menu of the joint is its Karak Chaii — a hot and flavourful tea brewed with a myriad of spices that acts as the perfect way to kickstart your morning (or afternoon or evening, chai time is whenever you want it to be). The signature beverage is also available in iced and frappe form.
The restaurant also offers a veritable treasure trove of Indian snacks and meals that provide a comprehensive deep dive into parts of the country’s culinary history. Beyond the plethora of hot, iced or blended drinks, you can get all-day breakfast offerings like Aloo Paratha, Bun Omelette and Halwa Puri.
If you’re craving something more substantial, chaiiwala has got you covered for that, too. From Aloo Tikki Burgers, Chilli Paneer and Samosa Chaat to Kebab Burgers, Malai Boti in Naan and Butter Chicken Wraps, there is something for every palate to discover and enjoy.
Founded in 1927 in New Delhi, India, chaiiwala has nearly 100 years of history and legacy under its belt. From a small tea stall on the streets of India to what can now be called an empire, the original recipe of its infamous Karak Chaii has people coming in from far and wide just to get a sip.
The latest generation of the family took over the reins and introduced the brand to the U.K. with a store in Leicester in 2016. Five years after that, chaiiwala opened its first international store in Scarborough — opening up a slew of opportunities for the brand and kicking off its global presence.
The latest store at 1104 Danforth will continue chaiiwala’s expansion and will become its sixth store in Canada and the fourth in the GTA with no stop in sight.
Since no official date has been announced yet for the new store, you can hit up the Scarborough and Mississauga locations in the meantime to satisfy all your chai and Indian street food-related cravings.
