Two Toronto bars, Roncesvalles' The Grand Trunk, and Parkdale's Mezz, are collaborating to bring delicious breakfast sandwiches to the neighbourhood's residents. The Grand Trunk recently launched a "Brunchables Menu" which includes a number of decked out breakfast sandwiches hovering around the $6 to $7 price point. Allison Barrie of The Grand Trunk collaborates with Mezz's owner Sean McLellan in this new endeavour. The two are working hard to persevere through the pandemic and find ways to serve their neighbourhoods despite the imposed lockdown and prohibition of indoor or patio dining. They make quite the team, McLellan bakes the bread and Barrie uses it at The Grand Trunk for all their takeout breakfast sandwiches.
The Mezz closed about 10 days before the most recent lockdown and McLellan has been baking bread in the bar's kitchen in the meantime. He is trying to continue to support his suppliers and take advantage of the bulk pricing for ingredients.
On the takeout menu there are four regular sandwich items, as well as rotating daily specials. These sandwiches include tasty combinations like the 'Bravo Melt' which is a grilled cheese sandwich with brie, pear, avocado and cooked with spiced maple butter with the option to add bacon. Another delicious combination is the 'Slammin' Salmon' which include smoked salmon, red onion and arugula on an everything bagel with house made lemon dill garlic spread. If you are getting hungry reading this then hop on over to order one of these bad boys. They also have $5 dollar mimosas and local craft beers available to order.
The Grand Trunk is open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. until supplies last. If you are looking for ways to support local, head to 1718 Queen St West and check out this innovative bar! You will be helping out the owners of these beloved bars and treating yourself to a taste of the what Allison Barrie with the help of Sean McLellan are churning out.
