Toronto’s original Birria taco joint opens second location downtown

Add another reason to eat your heart out at Toronto's World Food Market. Kensington Market’s very own Birria Catrina, a.k.a. Toronto’s first eatery to serve the popular Mexican dish, Birria, has officially joined the Yonge and Dundas market with their second-ever location.

Birria is a slow-cooked, traditional Mexican meat stew from the state of Jalisco, which is where Birria Catrina’s owners, Abraham Luna and Lluvia Minton, call home. Here, Birria Tacos are made with tender meat topped with cheese, freshly chopped cilantro and onions, then generously dipped into a steamy bowl of Birria consommé.

For Luna and Minton, the chance to share their authentic Mexican cooking is a simple joy of its own.

“We love that people know Mexican food and we want everyone to enjoy it. What better place than in the World Food Market, where there is a lot of cultural diversity,” they said.

To emphasize their dedication to inclusivity, Birria Catrina uses only halal meat for all their dishes, including their latest additions—a scrumptious Birria Ramen––plus a traditional Mexican Torta bathed in rich consommé from their signature Birria.

Even as the weather gets colder, it’s still all smiles and warmth for Luna and Minton. “We are a couple of young people who came to this country to delight everyone with our Mexican cuisine. A warm hug to all the people, we are waiting for you.”

As the only establishment in Toronto specializing in all things Birria, their new location at the heart of Yonge and Dundas Streets makes Birria Catrina the ultimate all-day comfort food spot for downtown shoppers and diners. Just remember to bring several napkins so you can dive unapologetically into your Birria Taco.

Find Birria Catrina’s new location in the World Food Market at 335 Yonge Street, Tuesdays to Sundays from 12 p.m. to 12 a.m.
