This Toronto restaurant is fighting food waste with amazing deals

For anyone who lives in the trendy junction neighbourhood, Farmhouse Tavern is likely a spot you frequent often. However, if you don't reside in the area, here’s your reason to visit -- the restaurant’s weekly Sunday event aptly titled “F*ck Mondays”.

Farmhouse Tavern initially started this event to minimize food waste before the restaurant closes Monday-Wednesday. The goal of the initiative is to sell any food and drinks -- that would have otherwise been thrown out -- for amazingly cheap prices.

Here’s how it works: Once brunch service is over at 3 pm they begin hourly specials, which they indicate by ringing a cowbell -- it is a farmhouse after all!

The event commences at 3 pm with $3 mimosas (yes, you heard that right), which is followed by $4 caesars at 4 pm. Come 5 pm, buck-a-shuck oysters are on offer, which is then followed by $6 draft beers (6 pm), discounted appetizers (7 pm), discounted wine (8 pm) and finally, discounted entrees (9 pm).

You can feel the anticipation and excitement in the room as the kitchen starts to run out of dishes. It seems like every couple of minutes a server runs over to cross yet another dish off the central chalkboard menu.

While the event is a lot of fun, the incentive behind it is admirable. Food waste is a prevalent issue in restaurants across the city so seeing an establishment doing their part to prevent it is a trend we hope catches on. Plus, every ingredient they use is sourced from Ontario which is why the menu changes constantly.

Head on over to Farmhouse Tavern on Sundays for cheap drinks, great food and a lot of fun.
