Rhyz Restaurant is hosting a series of themed pop-ups beginning this August to showcase Afro-Caribbean cuisine.
The pop-up concept is curated by Alex Fields, who has over 10 years of culinary experience. Originally from Montreal, Fields teamed up with his brother -- another culinary veteran to bring their venture to Toronto, where they hope to "test the waters" and push the boundaries of southern comfort food in the city.
The brothers will be hosting a series of pop-up events, occurring once a month, highlighting Afro-Caribbean cuisine, each with a different theme. Bubba's Fixins, the first of the series, features a five-course dinner inspired by Southern home cooking, with a fine dining twist.
The menu takes a modern approach to soul food, including cornbread with whipped pork butter and spiced honey, sweet and spicy pig ear lettuce wraps and a cornmeal crust buttermilk pie. According to their Instagram post, the concept stems from the brothers' take on African exodus and modern culture in Canada.
"We don't try to do anything classical; we refine it and make it modern," says Fields.
The southern themed dinner will include drinks, live entertainment and a raffle. The team is also calling for local Black artists, writers, singers and performers to reach out for a chance to perform at the event.
The first pop-up is Friday, August 7, at Gayley's Cafe at 1424 Dundas Street West. There will be two seatings of 25 people each, the first from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. and the second between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m.
Tickets for the Rhyz Restaurant pop-up are $91.19 per person for the five-course dinner and can be purchased online through Eventbrite.
