This secret laneway bakery is St. Clair's newest hidden gem

Becked Goods is a new hidden gem in the St. Clair area for all things sweet. Originally known for her custom cake and cookie designs, Rebecca Howard has recently opened her first bakery to sell her homemade creations.

Tucked in the alleyway of Humewood Drive, Becked Goods is serving up some sweet treats and coffees to the neighbourhood through a walk-up service window.

“We are still pivoting because we don’t have a physical space for customers to come into, obviously there’s some learning curves with the weather getting colder, but we have had a lot of success since we’ve opened up,” she says.

Howard takes pride in the quality of ingredients she uses in her products. From real Belgian chocolate to homemade caramel sauce, the community she serves receives a high standard of baked goods and drinks, no matter what they choose to order.

Some of the more popular items at the moment are the maple tahini muffins, toffee squares and their s’mores cookies.

“Before I opened the shop people would come to me for custom decorated cookies or cakes, but now I’m trying to experiment with different creations to see what people like,” she says.

For the Hanukkah season, Howard also specializes in unique flavoured rugelach like birthday cake and apple crumble which she says have been selling out almost daily.

Besides baking, something else Howard is passionate about is sustainability which she tries to incorporate into her business as much as possible. She offers Sunday Surprise bags at a discounted price where customers receive an assortment of items left over from the week prior. She says it’s a great way to try a bit of everything from her store as well as reducing their food waste.

“It’s been exciting to see the changes we’ve gone through and I’m sure we will continue to learn and grow as the months go on, but the neighbourhood has been really supportive,” Howard says.

Although her custom orders are currently on pause, Howard hopes once the bakery is established, she can go back to working on her more personalized items in the new year.

You can find Becked Goods in the alleyway of Humewood Drive at 684 St. Claire Ave West.
