If you find yourself hankering for a juicy Montreal smoked meat sandwich but a trip to Quebec anytime soon is out of the question, there's an alternative for you. A new restaurant solely dedicated to Montreal smoked meat has just opened in Toronto. MTL Smoked Meat is slinging out the francophone delicacy right by College and Spadina.
They have partnered with an award-winning smokehouse in Montreal and all of their meat is prepared using traditional methods. "We had to tweak the spice blend a bit to get it exactly where we wanted it to be and then we have the slabs brought to us right away in a refrigeration truck. From there, we do the delicate process of steaming it for over 3 hours in-house to give the meat the famous melt in your mouth texture," says owner Jake Yakobi.
The menu at MTL Smoked is short and sweet. They're doing Montreal smoked meat sandwiches on fresh rye bread with yellow mustard. They have a snack size, regular size and "The Beast," which is their extra-large helping. You can get pickles and slaw on the side to accompany your sandwich. They also sell ginger beer specials to wash it all down.
MTL Smoked is open now and operating out of the Freeplay Arcade at 300 College St. They are available for pickup or delivery through Uber Eats. They’re currently open from Wednesday to Saturday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. They soft-opened this past weekend and sold out of sandwiches, so be sure to place orders early to avoid disappointment.
