The pop-up behind Toronto’s latest pie obsession is moving to King West

Known for their deliciously innovative pies and last year’s #freepiefridays giveaways, New Pie Co. is officially moving into a more permanent home on King Street West.

Launched in May 2021 by Shiela Labao, New Pie Co. began as a pop-up concept and appeared all over the city with “pie drops” at bars and coffee shops. It didn’t take long for Toronto to get swept away by their creations, and Labao soon opened their first retail location inside stackt Market in November 2021.

Now, due to scheduled city maintenance, stackt announced they would be closing their market from March to May 2022. Fortunately, for their devoted fans, Labao has taken this opportunity to find a new home for their pies and baked goods.

Not too far from stackt market, you’ll find the new, New Pie Co. near King and Niagara, where Labao will finally be able to make and sell their pies in the same space. For customers, this means much more pies, baked fresh every day.

“We're excited to be adding a few more (non-pie) items to our menu. We'll have freshly-baked buns and pies available all day, and of course, we hope to expand our daily supply,” says Labao.

On top of their signature Buko Crumble Pie, you can expect to find the same amount of creativity behind their menu of new pie flavours every week.

At their King West outpost, they’ll be sharing a community kitchen with two other female-owned businesses, NaiNai Indonesian Food and Chau Catering.

“I am super excited to be near both Stanley Park and Trinity Bellwoods, but I'm also excited to be joining an all-female community kitchen,” says Labao.

The New Pie team had been keeping their eyes peeled for a space that had both a commercial kitchen and a retail space. After inquiring on the Food and Wine Industry Navigator page, Labao was immediately connected with the landlord of the community kitchen, and their new space began to take shape overnight.

“It happened unexpectedly. Things just aligned and I decided to take on the opportunity,” she said.

For now, Labao and her team are looking forward to settling in, enjoying their new surroundings, and getting to know their neighbours.

“We really want the community to visit and feel at home at our new space,” says Labao. “The goal is to be your sweet neighbourhood pie shop and establish friendships with our neighbours and community.”

The team plans to throw a housewarming party for the neighbourhood once everything has been set up.

As the weather gets warmer, they’ll also be making a triumphant return to stackt market in May and June, just in time for New Pie’s official birthday on May 1.

“We're going to do a lot of fun stuff that month and give back to the community that really made this into reality. We're also just planning on enjoying the summer with our neighbours. It's been a long winter. We can't wait for spring and summer pies!”

Last year’s summer fruits inspired a beautiful range of creations, including Blueberry Clafoutis, Strawberry Cream Pie and a jaw-dropping Chai Mango Pie.

Although they’ve already accomplished many milestones, New Pie Co. hasn’t even been around for a year yet, and they still have much more to share with the city.

Keep an eye out for more innovative pies and delicious baked goods from Labao, and don’t forget to join their many celebrations to come.

New Pie Co. will be opening their new space at 852 King Street West on March 5. As always, you can place your pie orders on their website or learn how to make your own at one of Labao's baking worskhops.
