It’s almost official: Toronto is finally getting its own Michelin guidebook.
Originally created in 1899 by the tire company to encourage traveling by car, the Michelin travel guides have since become one of the world’s most influential “stamps” of good food. With guidebooks in over 30 countries, their three-star ranking system has brought approval and worldly fame to chefs everywhere—everywhere but Canada, until now.
On May 10 at the Four Seasons Hotel, the French company will reportedly be making its official announcement of Michelin’s first venture into Canada via Toronto’s restaurants.
Not much has been released by the company nor participating restaurants, but it’s been rumoured that celebrity chefs Daniel Boulud and Alvin Leung will be at Tuesday’s announcement, with their respective restaurants—Café Boulud and R&D—receiving a Michelin star each.
More details will be released at the official announcement on Tuesday, but sufficient to say—it’s looking good for Toronto restaurants.
With all the closures and uncertainty of recent COVID-19 lockdowns, Michelin’s entry into Canada will hopefully encourage the revival of Toronto’s food scene, and bring Canadian chefs their much-deserved international attention
