For those not fortunate enough to have dined in the dimly lit and revered dining room of Toronto's unequivocal pioneer in the nose-to-tail movement, your time has finally arrived (well, sort of).
Famous Toronto restaurateur Jen Agg is launching a special takeaway dinner series that features classic menu items from her now-shuttered restaurant, The Black Hoof.
Agg's iconic restaurant, The Black Hoof, was a must-eat Toronto destination that garnered international acclaim and hosted many famed restaurateurs, chefs and food figures, such as the late Anthony Bourdain, before sadly closing their doors back in 2018.
Throughout the Dundas West restaurant's 10-year run, The Hoof gained recognition for taking the first foray into the world of nose-to-tail dining that favoured often overlooked parts of the animal like offal and made eating underutilized cuts trendy again.
Agg, who owns several other bars and restaurants in Toronto, like Cocktail Bar, Grey Gardens, Le Swan and Bar Vendetta, has, like many other hospitality folk, been struggling with driving consistent and substantial revenue throughout the course of the pandemic.
After making the decision to keep the patios of her Toronto establishments closed until the current health crisis stabilizes, Agg has had to turn to other creative solutions to sustain payroll and meet their rent, which is where The Hoof throwback meals come in!
The newest series is dubbed 'Springtime at The Hoof' and features a coursed dinner of favourite Black Hoof staples. For $75 per person, the dinner includes tuna crudo, bone marrow, beef tartare, brisket and a foie parfait. Available add-ons include a red or white pairing for $50, a cocktail for two for $20 or to complement the undoubtedly most beloved Hoof dish, the 'Luge it up!' for $6 includes a bourbon shot, which is to be poured into the bone after eating the marrow.
The Hoof dinners have been a success in the past, as Agg has launched a Valentine's Day, New Year's Eve and Holiday Feast this past year, with people loving the chance to once again enjoy a meal from The Hoof.
The 'Springtime at The Hoof' pre-cooked and reheatable meal is available to pre-order online for March 31 pick-ups starting at 4 p.m. at Bar Vendetta.
