This Taiwanese restaurant has been serving the same noodles for 127 years

The year was 1895 and Hung Yu Tou, a fisherman in Tainan, Taiwan, needed to cope with months when seas were rough and he couldn’t make a living solely by fishing. He soon created his own noodle recipe and started selling them in a stall, resulting in his famous Du Hsiao Yueh Dan Zai Noodles. Now, in its fourth generation of existence, you can find Du Hsiao Yueh and their tasty noodles right here in Markham.

In addition to their famous dan zai noodles (or da-a mi), the chain’s first North American location serves a complete menu of classic regional dishes to give you an authentic taste of Taiwan’s best.

Du Hsiao Yueh’s da-a mi consists of fresh noodles, prawns, Taiwanese minced pork, bean sprouts, and a soy sauce egg, all swimming in a delicious prawn head broth. They also come in perfect, appetizer-sized portions, so you still have stomach space to try their other dishes.

Another must-try at Du Hsiao Yueh is their Kabayaki Eel Sticky Rice, with thinly sliced, grilled eel glazed with a sweet soy-based sauce, all on top of a bed of sticky rice to soak up the sauce and juices.

In addition to noodles and rice dishes, Du Hsiao Yueh also makes a range of steamed, braised, and stir-fried items, including Taiwan’s famous Three-Cup Chicken, made with a cup each of rice wine, soy sauce, sesame oil, and topped with basil leaves for added depth. Here, it’s served in a sizzling stone bowl, adding crisp to its bite-sized pieces of chicken.

If you’re a fan, they also make a fantastic Marinated Abalone that can be ordered by the piece.

Last but not least, Du Hsiao Yueh also makes a small-but-powerful range of healthy Taiwanese desserts, including a Tofu Pudding and Golden Cordyceps Flower Soup.

Due to their popularity, make sure to give Du Hsiao Yueh a call in advance to reserve your table at (905) 300-2578. Before visiting, you can check out photos of their food on their Instagram page and view their full menu on Facebook. They’re located in Markham at 7040 Warden Avenue and are open every day from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
