SkipTheDishes, LCBO announce partnership to deliver alcohol in Toronto

SkipTheDishes has partnered with the LCBO to offer alcohol deliveries from 15 locations in Toronto, they announced on Friday.

Starting today, those living in Toronto will be able to choose from a selection of over 300 beer, spirits and wine as well as a selection of local products, and have it delivered to their door exclusively through the SkipTheDishes app or website.

"In the lead up to the holidays, this service comes at the perfect time to bring the safety and convenience of alcohol home delivery to customers in Toronto," said Steve Puchala, Senior Vice President of Restaurant Success at SkipTheDishes.

SkipTheDishes, one of the most popular food delivery services in Canada, have spearheaded supporting local restaurant businesses throughout the pandemic––most recently reducing commission fees on delivery services for restaurants in Toronto.

This follows after the Ontario government proposed a cap on third-party delivery service commission fees, which have been a leading threat to local restaurants in Toronto.

They have also previously offered a 25 per cent rebate on commission for local, independent restaurant partners and 0 per cent commission fees for new restaurants who join the network during the new restrictions.

Although, many Toronto residents and small business owners are not happy about the partnership.

In a time where many small businesses continue to struggle in the pandemic, many restaurants already offer alcohol for takeout as an additional stream of revenue, and many fear this partnership will further impact businesses for the worse.

Skip drivers in Toronto are Smart Serve certified, and alcohol deliveries pose a threat of serving minors or heavily intoxicated customers.

Those ordering alcoholic beverages through SkipTheDishes will be required to show valid-ID to confirm their age, and delivery of the products will be cancelled or refused if a person “appears to be intoxicated or attempts to purchase for a minor or impaired individual,” according to a press release.

Toronto residents can order alcohol through SkipTheDishes from Tuesday through to Sunday. Orders will be accepted from 10 a.m. to one hour before closing.
