During a time when patios are just beginning to reopen, today's restaurant closing news is extra sad. Scallywags, one of uptown Toronto's most beloved local sports bars, just announced their permanent closure.
Jeff May, owner of the 23-year-old pub, took to their Facebook page yesterday to share the disappointing news that they will now be shutting their doors. Opened in 1997, the bar has become an institution for soccer (aka football) lovers, always offering a laid back spot for excited fans to catch a game. It even became the home for Toronto's Liverpool F.C. Supporters Club to gather and watch matches alongside cheering, excitement and many pints of beer. Additionally, the multi-level bar was always a favourite for university students returning home for the summer, as it offered a sprawling rooftop patio that's ideal for large gatherings and catch-ups. Many loyal patrons and neighbourhood residents were no doubt looking forward to returning to Scally's following the launch of Toronto's Stage 2 reopening, but will now have to resort to a different, and likely less nostalgic, patio.
Since May's message was posted on Facebook yesterday afternoon, there has been a massive influx of messages from soccer fans, neighbourhood folks and former staff members, expressing their condolences in the wake of the pub's closing. Many cited the fond memories they made at Scallywags and the number of soccer games they enjoyed there, as well as the kindness, generosity and professionalism of both Jeff and his team of staff. Needless to say, they will be dearly missed!
