The team behind Rick's Good Eats restaurant in Mississauga is bringing their food truck to the other side of Toronto for the first time ever.
Rick Matharu, well-known as the winner of President's Choice show Recipe to Riches on the Food Network, is known across the globe. He is specifically known for his innovative Indian fusion dishes, like his Butter Chicken Lasagna. Street Eats Market, which is Canada's largest series of food truck-related events, will introduce Rick's Good Eats' food truck starting on June 4 at their Scarborough Town Centre location.
Since the pandemic, this market will be Rick's Good Eats first public event and will be bringing their most popular signature items to Street Eats. People will be able to try Rick's gourmet samosas, like the Butter Chicken Samosa, Jerk Chicken Samosa, a vegan Dosa Potato Samosa. Also on the menu are desserts, like the Ras Malai Cheesecake Samosa dusted with cinnamon sugar.
Their menu will also feature their Loaded Fries that are a top seller and are fully loaded in either Butter Chicken or Shahi Paneer along with many other fixings. Something else to look out for is their Tandoori Fried Chicken, that that is 24-hour marinated, double fried, coated in two sauces and served on Masala Fries––this dish was the winner at the Fried Chicken Festival in Mississauga.
They are also bringing their Tandoori Gar-Par Chicken Wings, which will be exclusively at Street Eats and not available at the restaurant. In addition to these dishes, you can also pick from Mango Lassi, Fresh Pressed Juices and Matri Chips as well, and their signature spices will also be available for people to pick up.
Rick's Good Eats started as a food blog over a decade ago––Matharu always felt that he was a foodie. He began with taking pictures of his fusion creations, recipes, reviewing restaurants and posting all over Tumblr and Facebook. In 2012, he entered into the second season of a Food Network reality show called Recipe to Riches and ended up winning with his Butter Chicken Lasagna.
He then decided to start a pop-up series with his mother and business partner, Manjeet Matharu. This resulted in the duo sharing their family recipe for gourmet samosas all across the GTA. It consisted of his mom's flakey and unique pastry stuffed with Rick's own original and fusion fillings.
They opened up Rick's Good Eats in 2016 as an ode to the immigrant experience. They took classic Punjabi flavours and mixed it with comfort food classics as a reflection of my Matharu's second-generation upbringing in Canada. Eventually in 2018, they started up a food truck and grew to doing private catering and events over the past few years, doing midnight snack bars at receptions and cool events like TIFF afterparties too.
The pandemic has been tough for all food industry entrepreneurs and Rick Matharu has tried his best to keep evolving and changing with what comes his way. During the lockdown measures, Rick's Good Eats launched a spice line, which is their own signature blends they use to create their original recipes, and are shipping them across Canada, the US, and the UK.In addition to the spice line they also launched an online marketplace that has frozen items for people to take home and make whenever the craving hits.
Matharu also felt it was important for his community to learn and feel comfortable when cooking at home, so he got back into creating recipe videos on IGTV and Youtube. Sharing the love for food is important to him and he hopes to continue doing so.
Their truck will begin their soft opening on June 4 at the Street Eats Market STC location.
