Queen Street Bakery is hosting a pop-up this weekend that will feed you, as well as a person in Toronto experiencing food insecurity.
In collaboration with Feed It Forward, a non-profit organization aimed at tackling food insecurity in the city as well as reducing food waste, Queen Street Bakery will be looking for customers to “pay it forward” at the pop-up by making a small donation, and in return, receiving a complimentary fresh burger.
For every donation received at the weekend pop-up, Feed It Forward will serve up a fresh burger to a person in Toronto dealing with food insecurity at one of their events some time next month. Donations begin as low as $2, and is a great way to enjoy a burger, hot off the grill, while giving back to your community. One hundred per cent of the proceeds go towards tackling food insecurity in Toronto.
A staggering 20 per cent of households in Toronto identify as food insecure, meaning they do not have sufficient or secure access to fresh food due to low income and other socioeconomic factors.
Additionally, Toronto also produces close to 100,000 tonnes of food waste every year, with over 50 per cent of that being avoidable food waste, according to a 2018 audit by the city.
Feed It Forward is an organization that brings these two problems together to figure out a solution that can help tackle both simultaneously. This is done through their first-of-its-kind “pay what you can” grocery store, as well as pop-up fundraisers like the one happening this weekend at Queen Street Bakery.
Queen Street Bakery has also partnered up with a slew of local and Canadian businesses to make the pop-up as incredible as possible. Look out for refreshing beverages from Sapsucker, fresh cheese from Castello and locally-produced beef burgers courtesy of Loblaws.
The three-day event will take place this weekend at Daisy Lounge, located at 563 Queen Street West. Ring in the reopening of the province by giving back to your communities––the pop-up will be running from Friday, June 11 through to Sunday, June 13 between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. and after a break in service from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
