The city has lost several restaurants, bars, cafes and bakeries over the past year, and many continue to shutter their doors in the new year due to the pandemic.
Among these establishments is Prairie Girl Bakery, a well-known bakeshop specializing in scratch-made, old-fashioned cupcakes and cakes available in 16 different flavours.
Founded by Jean Blacklock, the bakery first opened its doors back in April of 2011 at its flagship location on King East. Since then, the shop grew in popularity and four more locations across the GTA were introduced.
It wasn’t until COVID-19 hit that the bakery had to close down four out of their five locations, leaving their storefront near Yonge and King in operation.
To help the business stay afloat, bake-at-home items like Prairie Girl Bakery’s very own chocolate cake mix and jars of their homemade icing were added to their line of products. This, however, was not able to help them make ends meet and on January 5, the business took to Instagram to announce its permanent closure.
“We are sorry to be sharing the news that Prairie Girl Bakery has permanently closed as of today, January 5, 2021,” reads the Instagram post. “Thank you to our wonderful customers for the past 10 years of support!”
Customers continue to mourn the loss of this beloved bakery on social media, saying they’ll particularly miss their chocolate cupcake topped with strawberry icing.
