Popular food truck opens space themed restaurant in Scarborough

One of Toronto's most popular food trucks, the Hungry Moon, is a staple at Street Eats Market, and they quietly opened their first location in Scarborough. This new spot is entirely space themed with moon crater walls, star-studded designs, glow in the dark stickers and a mural of their daughter and dogs.

After losing both their jobs due to the pandemic, Chef Faye Francisco and Chris Threlked took a chance at pursuing their passion with this food truck. They put their entire life savings into the truck and have been serving up food across the city at various festivals and markets. "Hungry Moon" was aptly named by their daughter Luna, who was their inspiration to get this going.

The menu at Hungry Moon centres around traditional Filipino dishes with modern takes. You'll find massive sandwiches made with a special brioche bun that is black in colour. Stuffed into them are a variety of fillings like the Red Stardust, which has grilled shrimp, tostone, guacamole and spinach. They also have classic Filipino silogs, which is composed of rice and eggs and is traditionally eaten for breakfast. You can get a number of toppings to go atop such as pork belly, fried chicken, longanisa sausages and more.

They also have a massive vegetarian/vegan menu because co-founder Chris Threlked insisted on it. “I was so excited to add a vegan section to the menu. As a vegetarian myself, it felt like the menu was missing something,” he says. You'll find a dishes like the Red Nebula, which is their sandwich stuffed with vegan shrimp, or a tofusisig silog as well.

Find Hungry Moon Foods in Scarborough at 4190 Kingston Road. They're open Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. They will be doing a grand opening this weekend so be sure to check them out and show your support.
