SUUP is a now-shuttered plant-based company in Toronto that first started out as a health bar serving up smoothies and soups back in 2018. Now they have fully rebranded as PlantCuts to connect back to their original plan––creating vegan versions of classic meats for plant-based eaters.
The idea behind the company was that they wanted to make sure everyone had access to nutrient-rich foods that are sustainable for people and the earth.
"We nourish, revitalize and rejuvenate, one meal at a time," reads a statement on their website.
The founder, Ron, decided to go plant-based a few years back after his doctor suggested to change his eating habits. This encouraged him to make lifestyle changes to his diet while also finding ways to create plant-based meats that don't sit back on flavour.
All of their vegan meats are made from scratch at their kitchen in Toronto. A popular alternative for a meat alternative is 'seitan', which is made from gluten. It involves a method in which you wash wheat flour dough with water until a sticky elastic consistency is achieved, then cooked. This process originated from Japan and is found in many East Asian cuisines.
Many plant-based eaters have found ways to prepare seitan that resembles a similar texture and flavour as meat. Luckily, PlantCuts has also mastered this method and provide a wide range of vegan deli meats that resemble classic meat options. On the PlantCuts site you can find Maple Smoked Bacon seitan, Pepperoni seitan, Salami seitan and a traditional seitan.
In addition to the 'deli meats', they also have frozen meals like a vegan butter chicken, miso glazed chicken, Moroccan fish and sesame beef. All of the foods come pre-cooked and must be refrigerated or frozen upon arrival.
All of the PlantCuts meats are available at Good Rebel, Summerhill Market, Fiesta Farms and some select Sobeys in Toronto. They currently offer free shipping for purchases over $99 and offer free pickup at their facility on 1 Wiltshire Avenue by appointment only.
