From their handmade, Italian gelato to the building's rustic charm, a visit to Piccolina is just what you need to satisfy your craving for a trip to Italy. Piccolina closes from February to April, meaning they just recently re-opened their King and Portland location for prime ice cream season, just in time as the warm weather rolls in.
Piccolina focuses on the classics––rather than coming up with new and trendy flavours, they see the beauty in the staples, and the art of mastering them. With that being said, Piccolina alternates between six classic flavours, such as Pistachio and Chocolate.
On top of their delicious gelato, they also offer beverages, baked goods, paninis and soup.
The partners behind Nodo Restaurants––Charlie, Tony, Gianmarco and Vito––saw a need for an ice cream store in the area. They had already been making gelato Nodo, so they saw this space as an opportunity to expand on a larger scale, as well as bring some sugary joy to the trendy neighbourhood.
The full name is 'Piccolina Gelato E Altra Roba', but is commonly referred to as Piccolina. In Italian, the term piccolina means small or little, which reflects the scale of the store. This is also a term that is used to described something that is cute, which is more than fitting for Piccolina's adorable storefront and worthwhile scoops of gelato. Additionally, 'altra roba' can be translated to 'other stuff', which refers to the other products they offer apart from their gelato.
If their King and Portland location is too far from you, keep an eye out for the reopening of their Leslieville location on 1192 Queen East during the first week of June.
Piccolina Gelato is located at 85 Portland Street and is open Monday to Friday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday to Sunday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m.
