A popular, limited-edition veggie option at the beloved Lucky's Chicken and Waffles is returning to the restaurant's offering.
This beloved chicken and waffles spot in Toronto is well-known for their exquisite, mouth-watering buttermilk fried chicken dishes. Their Fried Mushroom Burger, dubbed the "Shroom-wich", was first introduced last summer for a short period of time, and after a long hiatus, it has rejoined their menu once again.
Ever since Lucky's Chicken and Waffles introduced this delicious sandwich, dedicated customers have been asking for the sandwich to make a comeback.
The Shroom-wich is made of buttermilk oyster mushrooms that are coated in seasoned flour. It is then fried and placed on a brioche bun, topped with slaw, Lucky's maple syrup and pickles. For the summer, they also plan to introduce a grilled chicken sandwich and the waffle sandwich. Lucky's will also be offering a grilled option for wraps and poutines. Otherwise, you can always find their classic menu items, like the Lucky's buttermilk fried chicken drum sticks, served on a golden waffle with Lucky's maple syrup.
Lucky’s chicken and waffles was founded by Marcus Joseph––the logo was inspired by his son Gabriel and is a cartoon character of himself. The idea came about because he wanted a place that had great comfort food and a nice vibe to it. Unfortunately, COVID hit them hard and they quickly had to adjust to take out.
Joseph grew up in Montreal, and felt that adding poutine to the menu was a must. He previously worked in the entertainment industry and, while living in the US, got to experience different foods and experiences and realized there wasn't enough authentic-tasting buttermilk chicken joints in Toronto.
He had been working on the idea for a few years and first found a place on Parklawn Avenue and Lakeshore Boulevard by the south beach towers. Joseph shared that everything was secured and ready to go, but when it came time to pay and meet the owner, he says that once they saw he was Black, they started to back pedal.
The owner said they would get back to him since they got other offers, but never did, and the space was rented out to another tenant. Joseph felt like it wasn't meant to be and decided to give up on his dream to open up his own shop. A month later, his realtor found another spot on Lakeshore that needed some renovations, which Joseph took in stride, and Lucky's finally opened up in 2020.
Lucky's Chicken and Waffles will be sharing updates and new menu additions on their social media. The chicken joint is located at 2977 Lake Shore Boulevard West, and are open Sunday to Thursday from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday for an extra hour.
