Calling all donut lovers––there's a new doughnut shop in Mississauga, Ont. and they're fully vegan.
Joughnuts Doughnuts is a new plant-based doughnut shop that offers over 14 different vegan doughnuts bursting with flavour. You can find flavours like the 'Dunkaroo,'which they know will stir up some nostalgia for millennials, made with blue vanilla glaze, crushed vanilla cookies, vegan buttercream, and of course, colourful sprinkles. Or try their take on a Canadian classic––a maple-glazed doughnut called 'Oh Sweet Maple.'
The Joughnuts team is made up of family and friends, who are vegans and vegetarians, named Jon, Mel, Andrea and Justin. Jon took up cooking and baking during the pandemic and would often make his vegan yeast doughnuts to share with family and friends. The doughnuts were a hit, which led Jon and company to begin sharing them with others.
When planning how to execute Joughnuts, the four of them decided to utilize all of their strengths. Between them, they have a background in education, visual arts, design, photography, videography and film editing. Jon and Justin also have a vegan YouTube channel called WhoaVegan.
Food development and preparation, as well as social media, are all done by the four. Jon and Andrea have had the experience growing up in a household that revolved around food. Their family owns a vegan catering company called Veggie Paradise which is where Joughnuts currently operates out of.
Their goal with Joughnuts is to invite vegans and non-vegans to see the treasures of plant-based food, which can taste just as good, if not better, than food that uses animal products.
They currently have a charitable initiative through their business called "Share the Dough." For the month of March, they are donating a portion of their sales to Farmhouse Garden Animal Home and the Toronto Vegetarian Food Bank. Joughnuts values having a business plan and model that incorporates the concept of sharing and giving back to their community.
