Throughout the pandemic, restaurants have pivoted to offering a small portion of their menu for takeout. When the reopening of restaurants remained bleak and in the unknown, more restaurants began offering experience-based kits, like meal boxes and marketplace items––concepts birthed as a way to stay afloat during lockdown, but have come to stay even after restaurants continue to open up for indoor dining the first time in nearly a year.
Now, restaurants have found a new way to bring their dishes out to areas where they likely would have never gone before.
Freezing food has long been a dominant food preservation method used in North America, allowing cooks to pack up and lock in the flavours of their favourite dishes for months at a time. While the public knowledge on frozen food can be limited to wretched frozen TV dinners or the cardboard-tasting pizzas, frozen meals can offer up a ton of flavour-rich dinners that are incredibly convenient to prepare.
GoFoodie, a Toronto-based company that delivers frozen meals from beloved restaurants, began their business with a simple mission: to bring some of the best chef’s creations in Toronto directly to your dinner table.
The company aimed to combat the boring routine of traditional takeout food by use of fresh ingredients and delivering frozen food that holds onto its flavours.
Additionally, the GoFoodie model allowed restaurants to transport their dishes to places outside of their immediate neighbourhood, bringing their local creations to the tables of those in regions further out of Toronto.
“GoFoodie is more than a platform that brings flavours to your table. It’s also a platform that allows restaurants to showcase their creations across large distances,” said Mia Wang, co-founder of GoFoodie. “No longer will restaurants be restricted to their local areas. If you have great food, we’ll share it with the world.”
The process of getting a GoFoodie box is simple, and reminiscent of your favourite meal delivery services but made even easier. You can select your desired dishes from their online store, which can be picked by cuisine, restaurant, diet or occasion. Choose from a hand-picked selection of mains, sides, appetizers and desserts, as well as an impressive lineup of sauces, pastes, curries and preserves.
The box is then delivered within seven days of placing the order, and will keep in your freezer, in some cases, for months at a time.
What sets GoFoodie’s frozen-forward model apart is the ease of preparation––while most fresh make-at-home kits on the market can be more tedious and time-consuming than shown, GoFoodie ensures their frozen creations are packed to be ready to serve in just a few steps. As a cornerstone of their mission, GoFoodie’s easy-to-prepare meals are the greatest remedy for the busy work-from-home professional that just wants a delicious meal that can be hot on the table in a pinch.
Whether you’re looking for a quick and easy weeknight feast without the hassle of cooking or compromising on flavour, or if you’re just longing for a tasty dish from your favourite Toronto restaurant, GoFoodie has you covered.
