Translating to "fluffy fluffy", Fuwa Fuwa Japanese Pancakes is slowly taking over the GTA with the opening of their sixth location inside the Golden Square Plaza in Mississauga.
Japanese pancakes are a light and airy soufflé like delicacy, traditionally served after weddings to symbolize good fortune. The new Fuwa Fuwa location will boast a number of unique features, like a live bakery counter, calming soundscapes and an interior design that will transport you to a new dimension of relaxation and deliciousness.
Inspired by the Nishiki Market in Kyoto, Japan, the space is warm and welcoming with soft yellow lighting to brighten up the sweeping dome like ceilings. On one side is the open concept prep counter, where guests can experience a behind-the-scenes look into the making of their delectable pancakes and desserts, whereas the other side contains a large banquette with comfortable, spaced out seating.
“Our Golden Square shop is designed to take customers on a sweet journey, weaving in experiential elements in our design decor that we believe compliment the unique dining experience our food is famous for delivering," says Benson Lau, founder and business development director of Fuwa Fuwa.
A trip to this particular Fuwa Fuwa location will feel like an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. All baked goods and desserts will be made fresh and live on-site, and the shop has been carefully designed to evoke serenity, so guests can enjoy a light, but indulgent meal, in a spa-like space.
There is much thought put into the way their unique pancakes are prepared, and the products are all sourced locally. To achieve the appropriate fluffy consistency, one of their experts will whip-up the meringue like batter, before carefully placing the fluffy dough dollops onto the griddle. Once flipped and cooked to perfection, the topping fun can commence.
With many options to choose from, there is a beautifully plated pancake for everyone. The Fuwa Fuwa Signature is excellent for fruit lovers, with house-made cream sauce, fresh strawberries, blueberries, banana, icing sugar and a sprig of mint to finish.
The Tiramisu is another popular––and Instagrammable––option, with tiramisu cream and a coffee syrup that's like a sweet waterfall when poured on top of the cream. With less than two grams of sugar in each pancake, guests will be delighted and surprised at how light a Fuwa Fuwa meal can be, even when topped off to the nines.
Come for the pancakes, stay for the drinks. The highly trained baristas have been hand-crafting an array of beverages that will perfectly compliment your meal. From lattes, to matcha lattes, to Houjicha lattes (a tea latte made from Japanese roasted green tea, water and milk), there are a number of artisanal warm drinks to choose from, all decorated with impressive latte art.
They also have a number of iced drinks available, but the Strawberry Lavender Sunshine Iced Tea is a must-try; it's not too sweet with a wonderful balance of fruity and herbal flavours.
On Nov. 13 and 14, to celebrate the grand opening of their new location, Fuwa Fuwa will be giving away a selection of their signature desserts (like cheesecake, Japanese pudding or french toast) for free with the purchase of their Signature Pancake.
The newest Fuwa Fuwa outpost is located at 1177 Central Parkway West in Mississauga, and officially opened to the public on Saturday, Nov. 13. To check out their full menu, visit them online or follow along their pancake-filled journey on Instagram.
