Fran's Restaurant closes Front and Yonge location, forced out by landlord

Fran’s Restaurant is permanently closing their location at Yonge and Front Streets before the end of the year.

Robert Kim, who runs Fran’s with his family, told CityNews that the closure is in part due to an uncooperative landlord and current COVID-19 restrictions––a common ground that has caused countless businesses in Toronto to shutter.

Kim says they had been in the process of negotiating new lease terms before COVID swept through in the spring. They had been able to pay rent on a month-to-month basis until October, but with their landlord unwilling to offer support, they are being forced to vacate the premises before December 31.

The closure of the Yonge and Front location leaves just two Fran’s locations open––one at Yonge and College Streets and one at Victoria and Shuter Streets.

Fran’s announced their unguarded closure on their Instagram, thanking frontline workers and their loyal customers.

“As a family-run small business, we have worked tirelessly over the course of the pandemic to do our best to keep our employees working and to continue to provide Torontonians with the comfort food they have come to know and love,” they wrote.

The Yonge and Front location is the youngest of three locations, first opening their doors in 2010.
