Ford Canada shows dedication to renewable innovations by using plant-based materials

Sponsored by Ford Canada.

If someone told you Ford Canada was manufacturing trucks and SUVs using plant-based materials, the same ingredients you could expect to find in a smoothie, would you believe them?

When the topic of automobile manufacturing comes up, one likely equates steel, aluminum, glass and rubber to the process of building a car, not renewable plant-based materials.

Well, Ford is finding a different, more progressive approach to producing their cars.

Since 2000, Ford scientists have been researching ways to replace petroleum-based plastics in the production process. After years of experimenting, the company launched soy-based foam in 2007, becoming the first auto company to do so. Since then, Ford has introduced new composites using wheat straw (2010), kenaf (2013), rice hulls and cellulose (2014) and coffee chaff (2019) into their vehicles.

To show their dedication to renewable innovations, Ford has created a smoothie, which features ingredients also used in the production of some Ford vehicles.

In the smoothie, you will find coconut, soybeans (edamame) and brown rice, materials that are currently used and have previously been used in Ford vehicles, as well as the following ingredients in research: orange, prickly pears, agave and algae. And to round out the flavour, some pears and lemon juice!

As part of a larger environmental mandate from the company to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, Ford is altering the way they operate to help reduce the dire consequences of climate change.

"We're committed to carbon neutrality––it's the right thing for our customers, the planet and Ford. Ninety-five percent of our carbon emissions today come from our vehicles, operations and suppliers, and we're tackling all three areas with urgency and optimism," Vice President, Chief Sustainability, Environment and Safety Officer Bob Holycross stated in a company report.

By adhering to a climate change commitment, moving toward a circular economy and upholding sustainable operations, Ford Canada wants to show their dedication to the planet through actionable steps.
