Flora's Deli won many people's hearts this past year with their Italian-inspired sandwiches. After a short hiatus, they are back with a new partnership operating through Grape Crush––a beloved bottle shop known for their huge variety of wines.
The team, which includes Jesse Mutch, Ailbhe McMahon and Thomas Conrad, developed a strong friendship working together over the past few years by way of Labora and Salumi Bar, and were all laid off due to COVID-19. They all shared that after the lay off, they did not feel whole, since they were not doing what they do best––serving and cooking for the people. The three of them saw an opportunity to do something they knew they could do well and took a leap of faith in themselves.
As Flora's Deli opened during the pandemic, their first home took shape in Mahjong Bar, which they shared was incredibly exciting. Each member developed a strong bond with their tight following in a strange time when people were seeking comfort.
"It was a tough time for people and we felt a social responsibility to do things at a high level in the most accessible vehicle––a bun," says Mutch.
Upon Mahjong reopening, the team began their hunt for a new home, which was short-lived thanks to Nav Sangha, a partner at Grape Crush. Mutch worked for Sangha in the past and expressed he's always been the nicest, most supportive and passionate person to work with. Sangha was just as excited to have Flora's in Grape Crush as they were to be there.
The team plans to continue with their original menu, highlighting their classics for the time being. A fan favourite is the Norma Gina, made with eggplant cutlet, whipped ricotta, arugula and hot honey. Another classic many enjoy is their Club 2.0, made with crispy chicken, bacon mayo, lettuce, tomato and hot honey. And of course, they offer something sweet to top it off––Bombolone, which are filled doughnuts made with lemon cream and dark chocolate cream.
In addition to their classics, the team is closely working on some fun Fall-inspired dishes that they're asking customers to stay tuned for.
Flora's Deli is located at 1166 Dundas Street West and operate from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Wednesday to Sunday.
