"As tender as a butcher's heart," their slogan reads, and one this restaurant certainly lives up to.
David Brown, a seasoned butcher and owner of Fearless Meat, has been labelled as the 'Butcher of Canada' by Julia Child. Today marks the third anniversary of Brown's restaurant, but he is no newcomer when it comes to working with meat. In his nearly 50 years as a butcher, Brown has dialled in on giving back to his community along with making incredible food. At the start of January, he began handing out his famous 6-ounce 'Beach Burger' to seniors and the homeless for free.
A photo Brown shared on Facebook of him at a charity event with Julia Child in 1993.
"I just thought it was the right thing to do,” Brown told CTV News Toronto. "And it's a tradition that I've always taken very seriously. In fact, in the days before they had food banks butchers were the local food banks. So, I strongly believe in giving back to the community.”
This initiative is not the first charitable act Brown and his business have been a part of. Fearless Meat also hands out free coffee and ice cream cones to veterans, first responders and frontline healthcare workers. For Brown, giving back is more than just a charitable action, it's imbedded in his business. He hopes that other restaurants, who have the resources to do so, can give back when they can as well.
“I'm hoping that what we're doing here is an inspiration to other restaurants or businesses to help out the vulnerable communities,” he said in the interview with CTV.
Fearless Meat is located at 884 Kingston Road in the Beaches. They are available on multiple ordering apps as well as a direct-to-kitchen ordering platform on their website for pickups.
