The restaurant industry is no stranger to a high rate of turnovers. Add to that the expenses of operating a business in a city like Toronto, and it's not surprising when a joint shutters its doors within a couple of years of launching — if it lasts that long, that is.
That's why it's a big deal if a particular spot withstands the test of time and lives to see its fifth or even 10th anniversary. Hong Shing, on the other hand, is set to celebrate 26 years of operation on March 10, 2023, today — an occasion worth proper celebrations.
To commemorate the milestone, Hong Shing is introducing a slew of exclusive food and drink specials for the coming weekend:
- 1.5 lbs East Coast Lobsters for $26: Lobsters will be featured for $26 from the regular price of $35 throughout the weekend. Choice of Sauces: Ginger Onion Sauce, Black Bean Sauce, Spicy Dry, Szechuan Sauce
- Ginger Scallion Cod for $26: Golden fried cod fillets tossed with Hong Shing's newest ginger scallion seasoning.
- Fortress Fried Rice for $26: available for one day only on Friday, the dish features smoked Ontario duck breasts, shrimp, edamame, carrot, salted egg floss, soy butter and chives. Available for dine-in only.
To complement the dishes, Hong Shing will also serve a variety of cocktails priced at $15 each for dine-in customers. Being one of the few bars in Toronto that feature a large selection of Baijiu, China's national liquor, these drinks will champion the spirit. A few of the offerings can be found below:
- Shiitake Happens: Shi Wan Pi Baijiu, Brown Butter, Shiitake Mushrooms, Junmai Sake
- Shanghattan: Laojiao Touqu Baijiu, D.O.M Benectadine, Grove Seedlip, Angostura
- Pina Co Baijiu: Laojiao Touqu Baijiu, Coconut Rum, Pineapple
Hong Shing, which first opened its doors in 1997, is a Cantonese-style Chinese restaurant that has been a long-time local favourite, consistently providing delicious Chinese food to the people of Toronto. Through family recipes, the owners have created some of the city’s most beloved, shared “family style” dishes and comfort foods with fresh, traditional Chinese ingredients.
Twenty-six years later, Hong Shing continues to be a fixture of Toronto's food scene. With its commitment to innovation, community and excellence, we won't be surprised if it lasts another 26 years — still serving the community to the best of its abilities.
As part of its evolution, Hong Shing has launched a new website and is currently renovating its bar to support an incoming elevated drinks program. To check out the place in person, navigate to 195 Dundas St. W and indulge in the limited-time specials!
