This casual Korean spot makes “keto gimbap” with egg instead of rice

One of North York’s latest casual Korean spots, K-Food Kitchen, has created their own solution for gimbap lovers on a keto diet: Egg gimbap.

Gimbap, or kimbap, is a Korean dish similar to sushi, but instead of using vinegar to season the rice, gimbap’s sweeter taste comes from mixing the rice with sesame oil. Additionally, instead of focusing on raw fish, gimbap uses cooked and preserved ingredients like grilled Korean BBQ beef, ham, radish, or kimchi.

While K-Food Kitchen serves a variety of modern Korean dishes like traditional gimbap, fried chicken, and bibimbap, the most interesting is their Egg Gimbap, which replaces the gimbap rice with shredded egg.

This new recipe is especially appealing for those with keto diets, but its unique texture makes it a must-try for anyone. Their novel gimbap creation comes in three variations, including Bacon Egg Gimbap and Creamy Crab Egg Gimbap.

Another reason to visit K-Food Kitchen is for their Korean Fried Chicken, which are brined overnight, double fried, and cooked in fresh oil every day before being tossed with your choice of sauce or seasoning, as well as a few pieces of Korean rice cake.

“We don’t mind taking this extra time and effort to make a difference in quality,” writes the team in their Instagram post.

A few fried chicken sauces you should definitely try is the chef’s favourite, Original Red—a velvety sauce based on Gochujang, a Korean chili paste.

Their Gangjeong fried chicken is also a best seller at K-Food that highlights their house-made chili oil, made with tons of aromatics and four different types of selected chili powder, creating a balanced flavour with just enough heat and sweetness.

No casual food concept can be complete without some hand-held bites, and K-Food’s Fried Chicken Sandwich is another item on the menu that local foodies have come to love.

With a range of grab-and-go options from gimbap and bibimbap to fried chicken and sandwiches, K-Food Kitchen is an easy choice whenever you need a casual bite that’s as delicious as it is innovative.

Get your keto Egg Gimbap and other Korean favourites from K-Food Kitchen inside Center Point Mall on Yonge and Steeles. They’re open Mondays to Fridays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
