With their first overseas location in Markham, Brown Donkatsu is expanding by opening another location in North York by the end of the year.
Founded in South Korea in 1986, Brown Donkatsu specializes in Korean-style tonkatsu -- otherwise known as donkatsu -- with a variety of specialty sauces on top.
What sets them apart from other tonkatsu spots in the city is their secret brown sauce that’s prepared after slow cooking 19 ingredients for six hours, and their fresh, never frozen meats that are coated in crispy panko breadcrumbs made fresh every day.
The brand’s secret sauce and breadcrumb recipe came from Gyeongyangsik 1920, one of the most popular high-end Western-style restaurants in Seoul at the time. It was run by the father of Brown Donkatsu’s CEO in Korea, where donkatsu was also served as one of their main menu items.
It wasn’t until 2016 that Brown Donkatsu made its first debut in Canada by CEO Greg Kim. For the past five years, Kim and head chef Eric Jang have successfully developed and launched new menus out of their location in First Markham Place, all while keeping the brand’s glorious sauce and breadcrumb recipe alive.
Although they’ll be updating their menu towards the end of the year to include a few more trendy items, their current menu right now includes a variety of Korean-style cutlets such as pork loin, cheese wrapped with pork loin, chicken breast, shrimp and fish, as well as a wide selection of sauces.
These same offerings will be available at their new fast-casual takeout restaurant in North York at 6024 Yonge Street.
Official opening dates have yet to be announced; however, their North York location is slated to open in the summer. In the meantime, you can look forward to tasting their food at their new locations or head over to their storefront in Markham.
