Kensington Market is a go-to destination for taco lovers so it's always exciting when a new spot enters the scene. Birria Catrina opened earlier this month, joining the likes of iconic Gus Tacos, Seven Lives, and La Chilaca in one of Toronto's most beloved food corridors.
Birria Catrina stands unique among them for its twist on the traditional taco. Birria is a traditional Mexican meat stew originating from the Jalisco region and is often eaten on special occasions. Catrina's concept is simple but effective: dip your delicious tacos in an equally delicious warm, beef stew for maximum juicy flavour.
While there is no online menu as of yet, their Instagram gives a peek into the various offerings, including double-layered corn tortilla tacos with beef, onions, and cilantro ($4), gringa tacos additionally loaded with cheese ($6), quesadillas ($4.50), pizzadillas ($10) and occasional specialty birria plates. The restaurant also features an outdoor back patio surrounded by beautiful muralled walls.
Birria Catrina is located at 214 Augusta Ave and open every day from 11 a.m.–8:30 p.m.
