A popular Mexican restaurant was the victim of a social media hack this week that resulted in the loss of their account.
Pico de Gallo, a beloved Mexican restaurant concept, have booted up a new Instagram account after their original account was hacked on April 22. The compromised account, which boasted over 10,000 followers, posted an Instagram story yesterday that read ‘my account is for sale’, which stirred some questioning amongst followers.
It was later revealed on their new account that they had been hacked and the account is being held for ransom. In a private WhatsApp conversation posted on the new Pico de Gallo account, the hacker requested that the restaurant pay $300 to gain access to their account again, to which they obviously denied.
The owners wrote that they have gone to Instagram’s help centre to try and resolve the issue, but to no avail. Their only option has been to block and report the old account and start fresh.
All of Pico de Gallo’s previous posts are still up on their old page, but they do not have a profile picture––their new account showcases their logo and some further information about the breach.
You can help this restaurant by following their new account (picodegallo.toronto), and by blocking and reporting their old one {picodegallo.to).
Pico de Gallo is located in the heart of Kensington Market at 214 Augusta Avenue. They are open everyday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. through popular ordering platforms or by calling the stall directly.
