S'cream Speakeasy is a new hidden "speakeasy" bar in Toronto, created by the owners of the popular scoop shop S'cream Yorkville. They're known for their boozy ice cream and Turkish coffee readings, however, they've decided to take their creative ideas to the next level. Elif Tekin, the owner, was dreaming about the speakeasy concept for a while that she knew she needed to act on.
The idea behind this speakeasy is, you can only enter if you know the password. The password to the bar changes every time when there is a new theme. This past month, they held a Halloween-themed event, where after answering a trivia question, the password was shared with guests, which allowed them to purchase tickets.
"You’ll never know what’s gonna happen behind the doors. The only thing that is never changing are the mouth-watering cocktails and a warm atmosphere," says Tekin.
The Scream Speakeasy team wants guests to experience a comforting environment like a party at your own friend's house. They have also extended the secret speakeasy experience for private events, where guests can throw their own concept parties with unique passwords too.
Tekin shared she first immigrated to Canada from Turkey, where she initially worked as an engineer. After working her first job in Toronto as a server at a famous Asian chain restaurant, she quickly noticed how happy she was working in the hospitality industry.
"That was the moment I decided to follow my passion. After a couple of years in restaurants and bars, I opened an ice cream shop in the heart of downtown during the pandemic," she says.
She knew it would be difficult to pull off during the lockdowns and harsh winter in Toronto, but was extremely drawn to her passion of mixology. This prompted her to launch alcohol-infused ice creams and boozy ice cream cocktails that guests fell in love with. In addition to this, S'cream Yorkville provides traditional Turkish coffee readings that give guests a glimpse into their future.
