Although Toronto is already home to numerous beloved pizza joints, there's always room for another if it can impress Toronto's pizza-adoring crowds. Our city's latest delivery-only spot makes simple, solid pies that might just earn a spot on the favourites lists.
Mel's Pizza mysteriously popped up on Instagram just over a week ago, posting mouthwatering images of artfully prepared pizzas that piqued some curiosity. They quietly launched last Wednesday with no website and no physical storefront, slinging pies to the public for delivery only through UberEats and SkipTheDishes. The concept was created by Top Chef Canada alumni Matthew Sullivan, who has done his fair share of research on which components make for the best pizzas in North America. He brought his knowledge to Mel's by formulating a menu of unfussy combos made with high-quality ingredients, drawing inspiration from various popular pizza styles from across Canada and beyond.
Mel's menu is heavily inspired by different locations across Canada and their takes on various pizza styles and flavours. All of their pies are made using creamy, full-fat mozzarella from Cheese Boutique and their luxurious homemade sauce made from organic Bianco DiNapoli tomatoes. Salty, classic pepperoni is made using Ezzo Sausage Co meat, while "The Windsor" is an homage to this Ontario city with shredded pepperoni and mushrooms.
One of their simplest items stands out from the rest by swapping in vodka sauce for the usual tomato, then adding chilis, parsley and Pecorino over the blanket of mozzarella cheese. An East Coast-style pie features garlic butter, parsley and donair sauce, a typical Maritime pizza accompaniment that tastes like a sweet, thick version of garlic sauce, and their "Satellite" is tribute to the first Canadian restaurant to put pineapple on pizza (along with ham and bacon). Mel's also offers wings, a few veggie sides and homemade dipping sauces to go along with your meal.
Mel's Pizza is currently open only for delivery from Tuesday to Saturday, 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Make sure to grab a couple of their delicious pies from UberEats or SkipTheDishes to bring home for a classic, Canadian-style pizza night.
