A first look at Challenges, the new rewards feature on SkipTheDishes

Ordering food is great. It’s saved me from late nights at work, lazy weekend mornings, and, of course, those irresistible late-night munchies. When I found out about SkipTheDishes’ rewards program back in 2020, my first thought was, now I’m getting rewarded for doing something that gets me out of doing something?

I’ve gotten my fair share of free food with those Skip points since, and thought I couldn’t ask for more. Lo and behold, I hear about Challenges, a new feature that can actually fast-track my way toward more free food.

This is how it works: pop into the Rewards page of your SkipTheDishes account, and you’ll see a set of tailored Challenges that are based on your past orders. If you complete the requirements on one of those Challenge cards on your next order, then you get bonus points—on top of those Skip Rewards I’ve been cashing out since 2020.

This is a pretty game-changing concept in food-ordering, and by that, I literally mean “game.” SkipTheDishes has gamified the whole experience: Challenges not only differ from user to user to suit unique ordering habits, but also get refreshed so you never know what you’re going to get.

To start a Challenge, all I did was place an order that met the requirements on one of the cards. In this case, it was as simple as placing an order between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. with a subtotal of $15 or more. Once the order was complete and I was halfway through my $20 lunch, I was on my way to an extra 2,500 points. Before Challenges, that’s how many points I would have gotten only after spending $250 worth of food.

To my surprise, that one order also started another Challenge—for 10,000 points. This particular Challenge card requires 3 separate orders of $20 or more within 21 days. Ordering three meals over a period of three weeks? Completely effortless.

All the Challenges on my account have been unbelievably easy to complete. Even the hardest one—ordering pickup with a subtotal of $20 or more—just required putting on pants and leaving my apartment. It was hard, but for 3,000 points it was harder to justify not doing it.

I’m not the best at math, but the math here was simple: if I’m already ordering 3 times or more per month—and I know I do—then playing Challenges is an easy win that can earn me an entire meal for free.

The Challenges feature is still being rolled out across Canada, but everyone will be receiving theirs over the next few months. The team over at SkipTheDishes is also working on more types of Challenges to keep things exciting. As long as you’re signed up and have the app downloaded, you’ll get notified when your Challenges are live.

Happy earning, and bon appétit!
