Toronto's beach-themed patio in a parking lot is an oasis in the middle of the city

The Gerrard East Market, more commonly known as the GEM, has officially re-opened, which means you can once again enjoy all the activities this collaborative beer garden and patio has to offer.

The idea for the market came about when operator Adam Kelly and other local restaurant owners were brainstorming and trying to think of something that would be cool for the community, while generating some buzz for the neighbourhoods local establishments. After a successful Summer in 2020, the GEM is now back and better than ever, making Gerrard East a hotspot for all things food and bev.

"It's always been a collaborative idea and a way to bring people together. People in the East end are community-oriented and very supportive. GEM really is something that is suitable for people [and pets] of all ages," says Kelly. "It doesn't matter how old you are, everyone will be able to find something here they'll enjoy."

The patio is decked out in beach-themed paraphernalia, including deck chairs, umbrellas and a whole lot of sand. To keep the Summer energy alive, they will be pouring Aperol Spritz', paper planes and margaritas on site, with a wide selection of canned beer, cocktails and cider, available from local breweries like Left Field, Muddy York, Eastbound and Stock & Row.

Kelly has managed to gather a number of nearby vendors to participate in this year's festivities, giving you plenty of food options to choose from. Spots like Com Tam 168, Gardel, GB Hand-Pulled Noodles, Pinkerton's, 241 Pizza, La Cubana, Lavender Menace, Vatican Gift Shop and Poor Romeo, will all be running food over to the numbered tables. Orders can be placed via QR code and contactless app, operated by each restaurant individually.

They've even set up two big-screen TV's this year, on which they'll be broadcasting the seasons biggest sporting events. Kelly has also revealed that the GEM will be taking part in a pilot project that will allow outdoor music––an element they hope to add in the mix once restrictions ease sometime in the near future.

The Gerrard East Market is now open every day from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on the Northwest corner of Gerrard Street East and Marjory Avenue. Depending on the demand, they may extend their last call to 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The GEM is walk-in only, cashless, and equipped with washrooms. Pets, families and people of all ages are welcome.
