Restaurant owners pivoted to ghost kitchens following dine-in restrictions

Black Sheep Burger and Rico Burrito are the newest projects of four business partners who created these two online restaurants during COVID.

After more than 20 years in the industry, they were forced to close their restaurants' doors. So after the first lockdown, these restaurateurs got creative and pivoted to ghost kitchens.

"Due to the changing situation in the restaurant industry we had to find ways to use the space that we already owned and for us, the best way was to create new brands and put them online," said Pablo Velasquez, who is one of the owners.

They wanted to bring the experience that customers had at restaurants to their homes and realized that the best way to do it was by offering burgers and burritos, both popular comfort food go-to's (especially in lockdown) that work very well for takeout.

Black Sheep Burger has a great variety of gourmet burgers, sliders and poutine. They currently have more than six types of burgers, including beef, chicken, chorizo and veggie. All items come with hand-cut fries and salad.

One of the most popular picks is the Choripan, which is grilled Spanish chorizo with Argentinian chimichurri. The Black Sheep Burger, a beef patty topped with sauteed cremini mushrooms, melted cheddar cheese, and secret sauce, is also a favourite.

Rico Burrito offers burritos, tacos and bowls. All the items are customizable and customers can choose the protein of their preference, including beef, pork, chicken, fish and veggie options.

They also offer shareable items like chips with guacamole and even Latin desserts like tres leches.

Black Sheep Burger and Rico Burrito are located in Toronto, Mississauga, and Woodbridge. Pickup and delivery are available through popular ordering platforms.
