After more than 40 years in business, Oxford Fruit in Kensington market will be closing its doors. This family-run operation is yet another major loss for the city and will be greatly missed by locals and passers-by.
Their wide range of fresh produce, small pantry section and the signature sliding door in the winter are truly irreplaceable. K.T. Ng and her family are devastated to be leaving the Kensington fruit market after running the shop for the past 25 years. Oxford Fruit is sadly not the only market to succumb to soaring Toronto rents -- three other produce markets have closed their doors permanently over the last few years -- all of which still remain vacant to this day.
What was once a bustling spot for grocery shoppers is progressively becoming a barren strip, depleted of options. It is likely that we will continue to see these family-run operations close as the rents in Kensington market continue to rise. Tourists and locals can only hope that the unique eccentric spirit, that has come to define Kensington Market, will prevail.
Oxford Fruit Market just off of Augusta and Nassau will be closing as their lease laps, however, no confirmed date has been released.
