These sugar cookies are soft, buttery, and way better than anything store-bought. They are made with high-quality ingredients and a secret addition – sour cream – which truly makes them taste just like the ones that were always there at childhood celebrations (but even better). They are topped with creamy buttercream frosting and sprinkles, and are sure to bring back fond memories this holiday season.
Directions
Sugar Cookies
6 Steps
Step 1
Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cornstarch, and salt in a medium bowl, whisking until evenly combined.
Step 2
In a separate bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, followed by the sour cream and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth.
Step 3
Gradually incorporate the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, mixing just until a soft dough forms.
Step 4
Transfer the dough to a sheet of parchment paper. Place another sheet of parchment on top and roll the dough to approximately ¼ inch thickness. Refrigerate the dough for at least 1 hour to ensure it is firm and easy to work with.
Step 5
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Use a round cookie cutter to cut out shapes from the chilled dough and arrange them on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes, or until the edges are just beginning to set. Allow the cookies to cool completely.
Step 6
For the buttercream frosting, beat the butter until smooth and creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract and milk, and adjust the consistency as needed. If desired, mix in food coloring at this stage. Using an offset spatula or butter knife, spread the frosting over the cooled cookies, and top with sprinkles for decoration.
