How to make cold brew coffee at home
12 hours 0 mins Prep Time
0 mins Cook Time
Cold brew is one of those beverages that seems to be a speciality item, reserved only for the hands of master baristas working at the most artisanal coffee shops. So sure, why not pay $6, as you figure you probably couldn't make something comparable a home. Well, turns out, cold brew isn't such a difficult thing to hack after all, and we're about to tell you how to make the perfect cup of cold brew right in the confines of your own home.
Cold brew is simply made by steeping ground coffee beans in cold water. That's it. So there really is no excuse to cease drinking your favourite spring/summer time beverage just because you're stuck at home. Whether you take it shaken with cream and sugar, straight up on ice or mixed with sweetened condensed milk, the Vietnamese way -- we've got you covered.
Directions
Cold Brew
4 Steps
Step 1
Coarsely grind 1/3 cup coffee beans, big enough to be filtered by the French press but small enough to infuse properly.
Step 2
Place in bottom of French press or Mason jar, pour cold filtered water over the grounds and cover. Place in fridge overnight.
Step 3
If using the French press, press down on the coffee plunger or if using a Mason jar, pour coffee through whatever type of filter you have on hand (coffee filter, cheese cloth, etc.).
Step 4
My preferred method of drinking cold brew is to fill a cocktail shaker with ice; pour cold brew, half and half cream and simple syrup over ice and shake aggressively for 30 seconds. Pour into a glass, coffee will be frothy, and top with a dusting of cocoa powder.
