The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the extraordinary vulnerability of the people seeking charitable food assistance. A report published by the Daily Bread Food Bank (Daily Bread) shows that COVID-19 has led to increased reliance on food banks. There was an observed increase in the rate of new clients accessing food banks, three times what has been reported months prior to the pandemic. Among new clients, 76% report that they began accessing food banks due to COVID-19 and the associated economic struggles they have experienced. Action needs to be taken to ensure that the community is fed. Food banks around the province and volunteers that run them are working diligently to help their communities.
Food bank clients have, on average, just over $7 a day after paying rent, 30% go without food for an entire day so that they can pay their bills and one-third of these people are children. It is a dire situation and those who can need to help during times like these. As a community, we must help all members meet their food needs. Keep reading for a short list of food banks in Toronto and surrounding cities you can donate to today. This is not even close to an exhaustive list, but it is a good starting point.
